Let’s face it. Your face says everything. A smile is easy to interpret as someone who is relaxed, happy, pleased, amused, content. Any number of feelings are associated with a smile. But frown lines – that is another story.
After a time, repeated facial movements can etch furrows into our skin. These furrows are the result of a break down in collagen. Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes deepen with squinting, smiling and just about every emotion there is. Horizontal lines across the forehead develop after years of raising and lowering our eyelids in shock, surprise or perhaps in an attempt to keep saggy lids from impairing our vision.
The furrows between our eyelids (the glabella) – tagged “11’s” by some – rarely have positive emotion attached to their appearance. These vertical lines often convey worry, stress and worst of all anger.
Botox and Dysport are two neurotoxins that can be injected into various muscles in the upper 1/3 of the face to soften and restrict the movement of the muscles which cause dynamic wrinkles. These products are extremely effective in minimizing wrinkle depth and formation.
However effective, some people are just not into being injected, whether it’s the product or the needle itself, they’re just not having it.
The corrugator muscle is the “frowning” muscle, responsible for drawing the eyebrow downward and inward, producing those angry-looking vertical lines between your eyebrows. Corrugator resection is the option of surgically removing or resecting* the fibers of the muscle.
Performed through an upper eyelid incision and commonly done at the same time as blepharoplasty, Dr. Lee uses electrocautery* to partially resect the muscle. Incapacitating the corrugator muscle results in a relaxation of the vertical furrows and over time the skin smooths significantly.
If persistent and deepening frown lines are making you mad or just making you look mad, don’t worry, it’ll only make them worse. Don’t stress. Relax them with corrugator resection. You’ll not only look happier. You’ll be happy you did it.
